NSW Health Care Complaints Commission warns about dodgy cosmetic surgery providers

NSW Health Care Complaints Commission warns about dodgy cosmetic surgery providers | Cosmetic Surgeons | Scoop.it

AN INCREASING number of illegal cosmetic surgery procedures are being performed in Sydney homes and hotel rooms by non-registered medical practitioners, resulting in botched facial features. This is despite repeated warnings from plastic surgeons that patients should only have cosmetic procedures performed by a qualified surgeon in a hospital environment, and new NSW government laws cracking down on dodgy providers.

The NSW Health Care Complaints Commission has received numerous complaints about non-registered practitioners advertising various cosmetic procedures on social media platforms like WeChat, a popular Chinese messaging app. The procedures include double eyelid suturing — which is popular among Asian women — nose bridge lifts, protein suture facelifts, Botox, Dermal fillers and Glutathione skin whitening.

One of the most serious complaints is from a woman who had a double eyelid suture in a residential apartment in the Sydney. The treatment caused bruising and scarring to the patient and damage to her eyelids. The commission’s investigation found the person who performed the surgery was not registered as a medical practitioner in Australia and not qualified to conduct the surgery.

Along with the scalpels, syringes and bulbous implants that adorn Kourosh Tavakoli's operating theatre, there is an extra tool that may not boost any breasts but will certainly boost the good doctor's social media profile: a mobile phone.

The phone is logged into Snapchat and it has been documenting the daily rhythm of the practice since the morning, when Dr Tavakoli trained it on his own face and announced the operations he would perform that day.

How To Avoid Plastic Surgery Disasters

How To Avoid Plastic Surgery Disasters | Cosmetic Surgeons | Scoop.it

Plastic surgery deals with the very soul of a patient, which is why it has been called ‘surgery of the psyche’ – it has as much of a mental and an emotional impact on your life as it does physical.

This is because, without sounding overly clichéd it can truly change a person’s life and the way they perceive and interact with the world around them.

This is why it is imperative to ensure your plastic surgeon has your best interests at heart and offers the best care before, during and after your procedure.

Cosmetic procedures are now the surgery of want not need. The multibillion-dollar industry is represented on virtually all television channels and accessed easily online. Many nations have realised the potential for cosmetic tourism, which can be a significant addition to a country’s GDP.

Cosmetic medicine and surgery have advanced tremendously over the past three decades since I trained as a plastic surgeon. High morbidity rates in procedures such as breast implant surgery, tummy tucks, aggressive facelifts and eyelid reductions are now a thing of the past.

Push to regulate cosmetic surgery

Push to regulate cosmetic surgery | Cosmetic Surgeons | Scoop.it

Plastic surgeons are calling for WA laws to protect patients from unsafe cosmetic surgery, including the use of high-dose local anaesthetic. James Savundra, the new Perth-based president of the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons, said other States needed to follow the lead of NSW, which is introducing legislation.

The regulations will require surgery such as breast enlargements, tummy tucks and liposuction to be carried out in licensed premises with strict standards. The move comes after a spate of complications in cosmetic surgery patients in Sydney and on the Gold Coast, including infections from breast implants and seizures from sedative drugs.

NSW government to regulate the state’s cosmetic surgery industry

NSW government to regulate the state’s cosmetic surgery industry | Cosmetic Surgeons | Scoop.it

COSMETIC surgery patients will have greater protection in New South Wales with the introduction of new laws. Procedures such as breast augmentation, abdominoplasties, and liposuctions will only be able to take place in licensed premises subject to the same standards as private hospitals.

The facilities have nine months from Friday to obtain licensing under the Private Health Facilities Act and Regulation, said Health Minister Jillian Skinner on Friday. Other States should now follow NSW’s lead, said the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).

“This is a long overdue win for patient safety that will help ensure people undergoing cosmetic surgery procedures are afforded the same protections as patients undergoing any other type of invasive of surgery,” said ASPS vice president, Dr Gazi Hussain.

A SOUTH Australian woman says she and a friend were injured when they were jumped by a kangaroo while cycling.

Sharon Heinrich, 45, said that she and her friend Helen Salter, 47, were cycling side by side along a tourist route in the South Australian wine region of Clare Valley last week when she saw a large kangaroo standing on a slight embankment.

As they passed, the kangaroo bounded across the path, landing with his long hind legs first on Heinrich’s left torso and then on Salter’s back. It knocked both from their bikes before hopping off, apparently unharmed, Heinrich said.

Australian Boob Job Patients Were Having Heart Attacks, So the Government Overhauled the Rules | Cosmetic Surgeons | Scoop.it

2015 wasn't a great time for plastic surgery. Throughout the year, Australia's largest cosmetic surgery clinic, the Cosmetic Institute, repeatedly gave their patients unsafe amounts of anaesthetic without their consent, as reported by the NSW Health Care Complaints Commission (HCCC).

Six people were rushed to emergency—one with a punctured lung, another having a seizure, more still in cardiac arrest. On top of that, there was turf war brewing between surgeons.

It could be said the best thing about the angst-ridden teenage years is that you eventually outgrow them. Until then however, insecurity and self-doubt very much prevail — a less than ideal mix when it comes to teenagers making irreversible decisions.

It’s this reasoning behind the release of new guidelines by the Medical Board of Australia designed to limit a teenager’s access to a cosmetic surgeon, including the introduction of mandatory waiting periods.

Society of Plastic Surgeons says it doesn't know how many illegal clinics exist | Cosmetic Surgeons | Scoop.it

The Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons says it doesn't know how many illegal cosmetic surgery clinics are operating in Melbourne. A Docklands apartment was raided yesterday amid claims an occupant had been providing cosmetic procedures without medical registration.

Dr Gazi Hussain, vice president of the ASPS, told Ross and John it's a huge concern. "We just don't know the extent of these things," Dr Hussain said. "They could well be widespread, but I'd like to think they're not." Dr Hussain said people who choose these unlicensed clinics are taking a "massive" risk. "They've got dogs and cats roaming around the apartment. The area doesn't show any signs of sterility."

Payday lenders to offer elective and cosmetic surgery loans

Payday lenders to offer elective and cosmetic surgery loans | Cosmetic Surgeons | Scoop.it

Medical experts warn a push by payday lenders into loans for elective and cosmetic surgery could lead to a rise in risky procedures and put people's health at risk.

Lenders are looking for new revenue streams following a crackdown into the sector by the corporate regulator.  MoneyMe, which was set up two years ago and offers small credit and cash advance loans, said it was expanding into large personal loans and "health finance" loans, both aimed at young people.

The loans come with an interest rate of up to 35 and 25 per cent respectively and the latter would be offered to patients as they leave a doctor's or dentist's office.

Botox used to be a procedure that was only associated with A-list celebrities over the age of 40, a treatment that was common among the rich and famous but surrounded by a cloak of secrecy.
